16 January 2015
Dear Friends & Colleagues,
On behalf of the Malaysian Endocrine & Metabolic Society (MEMS) and the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies (AFES) it is my great pleasure to invite you to the upcoming 18th AFES Congress to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from the 10th till the 13th of December 2015. The congress is the scientific meeting of AFES which is held every two years and its organisation is rotated among the seven country society members of AFES. The congress will feature the latest advances in endocrinology as well as an update on the day to day practice of clinical endocrinology by renown experts from the region and internationally.
One of the new and exciting features of this year’s congress is a series of lectures entitled “Highlights of ENDO” which will be delivered by the experts from the Endocrine Society USA. These highlights are an overview of the recent advances that had occurred in the past one year in the various fields of endocrinology which were presented during the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Endocrine Society. This initiative is made possible by the close collaboration between MEMS, AFES and the Endocrine Society. Instead of us travelling all the way to the States and spending money to attend this premier endocrine scientific meeting, we now bring the highlights of this meeting to you.
As in previous AFES Congresses, we will have a strong contribution by the experts from the International Society of Endocrinology (ISE) currently based in Leeds, UK. These experts will participate in the various scientific programmes which we have planned for the congress. As they are mainly from outside of the USA, we hope it will bring balance to the overall outlook of endocrinology.
Although the participation of international experts is being given prominence it has always been the policy of AFES to also feature presentations by our very own experts from the region. These experts will highlight the peculiar nature of endocrine diseases in our region and bring forth difficult and challenging cases that are encountered locally. As such we have given the series of thirty odd Meet the Professor sessions an interesting theme “Challenging & Difficult Cases in Endocrinology”. These cases will be compiled into a book and in the form of DVD disc as mementos for you to bring home.
This biennial congress is also about getting our young trainees and scientists together, to learn and to present their work. In order to encourage this, we have provided various incentives and subsidies. For those trainees whose status is vouched by their supervisors who submitted at least two accepted abstracts they will only be paying half of their registration fees. Similarly for trainees from the region who registered themselves through their local endocrine societies they will be charged the minimal registration rate equivalent to that charged for Malaysian trainees. To help with their accommodation the organising committee has put up a list of budget accommodation available around Kuala Lumpur which is accessible by public transport. In addition, numerous attractive prizes are also in store for those who walk away with awards in the various categories for oral and poster presentations, all in the spirit of advancing endocrinology in this region.
Over the years one of the most exciting traditions of the AFES Congress is the cultural night. It is a night that everyone looks forward to when members of the country endocrine societies turned up in their national costumes and performed cultural dances or songs. In order to make this event a more memorable one there will be healthy competition among the participating endocrine societies where the judges will be the audience themselves! Interspersed between these performances we hope to be able to entice the experts especially the renowned speakers to come up on stage and perform either a solo or duet performance. There will also be a best dress competition for the attendees of the cultural night so everyone should come in their best attire. If everything happened as planned we will really have a night to remember.
The organising committee is working hard to ensure the success of this congress and we hope you will be there to share it with us.
“En espérant vous voir à Kuala Lumpur en décembre”
Yours sincerely,
Nor Azmi Kamaruddin
Chairperson
Organising Committee
