An AVS Demonstration and seminar was recently held in Institut Kanser Negara, jointly organised by the Endocrinology Department of Hospital Putrajaya and the Radiology department of Institut Kanser Negara. The objevtive of the event was to examine how we can improve our AVS success rate, and also provide education for endocrinology trainees. The event was supported by MEMS in the form of sponsorship of lunch for the attendees.

Two guest speakers were invited from Japan – Assoc Prof Takashi Yoneda (Kanazawa University Hospital) and Mr Nobumasa Kawahara (Trust Medical, Japan) to demonstrate their rapid cortisol kit and to share their experience in improving the success rate of AVS.  Dr Ezamin Abdul Rahim gave a talk on the challenges of performing AVS from a radiologist’s perspective, and Dr Yusniza Yusoff shared the local experience of Hospital Putrajaya patients who underwent AVS at Institut Kanser Negara.

The event was attended by over 40 delegates comprising of endocrinologists,  endocrinology trainees, biochemists and interventional radiologists from all over Malaysia. Two live adrenal venous sampling procedures were performed with a live videoconference link set up between the angio suite and the seminar room. The rapid cortisol kit was used during the procedures, courtesy of Trust Medical. An interhospital case discussion was also held as part of the day’s program.

This event successfully brought together a multidisciplinary audience and resulted in a stimulating discussion and hopefully will pave the way for future collaboration. A multi-centre research study to improve our AVS success rate is currently being planned.
