The Children’s Annual Diabetes Camp “Universiti Sains Malaysia” (USM) was held on the 25th November 2017 at Tok Aman Bali Hotel, Pasir Putih Kelantan. The main objective of the camp was to educate on the practical management of diabetes as well as psychological coping mechanisms. In addition to that, there was a practical portable insulin pump revision by Medtronic staff.
There were 23 patients, 10 facilitators and 10 counsellors. Majority of the patients were from Kelantan and a few from Terengganu. The participants were divided into 5 groups and each group need to complete 5 stations. For each module they need to spend 45 minutes. They were taught on the basic care of diabetes such as insulin injection, self-monitoring of capillary blood sugar, recording of blood sugar in a diary, management of high and low blood sugar, sick days’ management and the effects of exercise on blood sugar.
As diabetes may be complicated by psychosocial issues especially among adolescents, this year we invited our Clinical Psychologist, AP Dr Azizah to teach them some of the coping mechanisms. There was a separate session on subcutaneous portable insulin pump revision which were attended by all pump users and was conducted by Miss Julie from Medtronic.
We would like to express our gratitude and sincere appreciation to all our sponsors, staffs and patients for making this event a success. We hope we would get more support to continue doing this event on a regular basis in order to help our children and young people with diabetes to cope with their conditions.
