Working Together to Tackle Diabetes

The Diabetes Education Workshop was held on 11th August 2018 in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sungai Buloh Campus. This workshop was organized by the Paediatric department, Faculty of Medicine, UiTM in collaboration with the Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Unit, University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). This workshop was supported by the Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS), Medtronic Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., I-SENS Bionsensors Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and Tabung Amanah Pediatrik, Faculty of Medicine, UiTM.
 
This workshop was attended by 70 participants including doctors, nurses and children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and their parents. The program started at 8 am with registration of the participants. During registration, a few of the T1DM patients were put on a trial of insulin pump, for their personal experience. This is followed by welcome speech and introductory lecture by Dr Noor Shafina Mohd Nor, the Paediatric Endocrinologist from the Paediatric Department, UiTM.
 
Subsequently, the participants were then separated into 2 groups consisting of the patients who are the children and adolescents with T1DM with their parents, and the remaining were participants among doctors and nurses.
 
Several lectures were delivered during the workshop in the morning session. The topics included selfmonitoring of blood glucose, insulin injection techniques, diabetes home management including hypoglycaemia, sick day management and DKA. There were lectures on nutritional aspect of diabetes
including on healthy eating and carbohydrate counting, which were delivered by Pn Fatimah Ishak, the dietitian from UiTM Medical Specialist Centre (PPUiTM).
 
During lunch time, all the participants including the doctors, nurses and the patients had their lunch together. The doctors and nurses observed how the patients check their blood sugar and together they performed the calculation for insulin requirement based on carbohydrate counting and hyperglycaemia correction. Then, the techniques of the insulin injection performed by the patients were observed.
 
Practical session was held in the afternoon. The patients, doctors and nurses were divided into small groups and group discussions were done based on 4 different case scenarios. The case scenarios were based on various topics including hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia and sick day home management. After this session, a lecture on insulin pump was delivered by Dr Azriyanti Anuar Zaini, the Paediatric Endocrinologist from UMMC, together with the representative from Medtronic Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. The workshop ended with certificate presentation and afternoon tea at 4.30 pm in the afternoon.
 
To ensure understanding and effectiveness of the workshop among the doctors and nurses, pre- and
post- workshop quiz were delivered in the form of Googleforms. Subsequent analyses were performed and validated the improvement of knowledge after the workshop. Participants expressed their satisfaction and happiness with the workshop and some expressed their wishes for a similar program to be held in the future.
