About MEMS

The Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS) is a professional organisation established in 1981 to serve and advance the interest & practice of endocrinology & metabolic diseases among the Malaysian medical fraternity. MEMS organises an Endocrine Congress annually, conducts regular courses for post-graduate doctors as well as general practitioners and assists the Malaysian Ministry of Health and Academy of Medicine to conduct the endocrinology fellowship training programme.

In the early days the most regular activity is that of the Combined Clinical Meetings where members from different institutions would present interesting and difficult cases. The monthly combined clinical meeting has its roots in when endocrinologists in the Klang valley used to meet and share their clinical cases in University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur (UM Medical Centre). Discussion was rather informal and friendly ending with a dinner at a nearby Chinese restaurant. This tradition has continued over the years and is now a regular monthly feature, rotating among the different tertiary centres in Klang Valley. In addition there is now a monthly Paediatric Combined Clinical Meeting which unlike its rotating adult counterpart is held in UKM Medical Centre.

Another activity in the 1990s was its ‘road show’ where a small group of dedicated endocrinologists would travel around the country, from one state capital to another, conducting endocrine courses for the local doctors. During these road shows, many social activities were also organized such as fishing trips and picnics that helped to increase the bond of friendship and spirit of belonging among its members. Many would-be and budding endocrinologists were attracted by the commitment and dedication shown by this small group of teachers that they themselves would later go on to pursue this interesting field of medicine.

The ‘road shows’ would later evolve to a more formal ‘Postgraduate Endocrine Course’ (PEC), which was still held around the different state capitals. Recognising the needs to further promote research in the field of endocrinology, the PEC then became what is our annual MEMS Annual Congress (MAC), with renown international & regional speakers invited to share the recent advances in various fields of endocrinology and stimulating discussions with the experts.

MEMS is a member of the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies (AFES). The ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies (AFES) is made up of 7 National Endocrinology Societies from the ASEAN region comprising of: Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. MEMS is also affiliated with the International Society of Endocrinology (ISE), a strategic network of National Endocrine Societies which aims to stimulate international cooperation and co-ordinate scientific exchange, debate and dissemination between healthcare professionals around the world. Current membership comprises over 70 national endocrinology societies, representing nearly 50,000 endocrinologists worldwide.

Our website at www.mems.my is set-up to reach out to its members, health care professionals and the general public. You will find relevant Clinical Practice Guidelines, updates on MEMS Programs & Activities as well as announcement of other relevant endocrine & metabolic diseases conference here.
